About Andrew:
Andrew Scott is the owner and chief sound engineer of Studio401, an audio production business based in San Francisco. Studio 401 has worked with some of the finest musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area. Services include tracking, mixing and mastering in the studio and on location. Andrew is originally from England and has brought his experience in world music to bear in his approach to music production. In addition to his work in the music field, Andrew has had a concurrent career in the human services field, including work as a YMCA executive and college instructor.
Project Summary:
Based on planning meetings with Hank Bannister, I recently spent two weeks in the Condor Valley with my mobile recording rig, tracking the exciting diversity of local music. We could have chosen pre-recorded music to include here on the website, but we want you to experience the true unfiltered cultural flavor direct from the Condor Valley.
Our goal is to bring you the vibrancy, passion and virtuosity of the local musicians. All over the world musicians are the story-tellers, the travelers, the messengers of history.
We recorded everywhere: in a studio at the Hosteria in Chicoana, at a doma (rodeo), in an outdoor natural amphitheater, and in hotel rooms. We criss-crossed deserts and lakes, and mountains and valleys - a true adventure! We recorded professional and amateur musicians of all ages. Maxi Lopez just turned 9 - you heard that right!
The music of Northwest Argentina merges indigenous and European influences. The short snapshots of songs here represent a nice cross-section of styles and rhythms from chacarera to zamba, to huayno and include instruments such as pan flute, queno (wood flute), bombo, cajon, guitar, and charango.
